Comment: The Scott Monument was built 1840-46 as a memorial to the writer Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832). George Meikle Kemp a self taught architect who built it never got to see his design completed, he tripped in a fog & fell in the Union Canal in 1844 & drowned.
