Outside Colosseum 1 * Vespasian started the construction works in 72AD. The theatre was inaugurated by Titus in 80AD. The theatre had seats for 50000 people and they all came to watch the bloody gladiator fights and wild beast shows. The inaugural games lasted 100 days in which 5000 animals were slaughtered. In 217AD the Coliseum was repeatedly struck by lightning and all the wooden structures, which included the floor of the arena were destroyed. * 2048 x 1536 * (1.46MB)

Forum Ruins * This was the city center at one point. Where people did their day to day duties. It was also where the Vestal Virgins. Their primary task was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta. * 2048 x 1536 * (1.41MB)

Vittoriano - Front * This immense monument is sometimes called the Victor Emmanuel Monument as it was constructed in honor of the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele II. The project started with G. Sacconi in 1885 and was completed in 1935. * 2048 x 1536 * (1.35MB)
